Sightseeing Cyclists Should Pedal Slower

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

Anything you can do to strengthen your legs will make you more efficient when you ride. Research from Norway shows that the stronger you are, the slower and more efficiently you pedal when you are going at a relaxed pace. Fourteen healthy subjects performed supervised heavy lifting (two sets of the heaviest weight that they could lift 12 times in a row) for 12 weeks, including two days per week of squats and leg curls. They improved by 20 percent in the squats and 12 percent in their leg curls. At the end of the study, their increased strength caused them to use a pedal rate that was about 10 revolutions per minute slower during cycling at half their maximal power output. They used three percent less energy to do this. Journal reference

When you are trying to go as fast as you can, use a fast cadence between 80 and 100 revolutions per minute. However, when you are sightseeing, pedal at 60 to 70 revolutions and you will use less energy to go the same distance. More on the best cadence for all types of cycling

It’s Time for Juice Fasting - Keys to Good Nutrition & Tips to Eating Healthy Feast Uri Yuri

Submitted by Keys to Good Nutrition and Tips to Eating Healthy Feast Uri Yuri

keys22g.jpg IT’S TIME TO START JUICE FASTING

“The single most powerful tool I have seen for optimum health and rejuvenation is the JUICE FAST!” - Dr. Otto Burchinger, M.D.

After completing my 12-Part series on Juice Fasting a few weeks ago, I was very motivated and ready to go on an extended juice fast myself. Normally I fast once a week on Mondays to give my system a rest. However, several times a year I like to go on an extended juice fast. Periodic juice fasting is one of the essential keys to good nutrition and to eating healthy.

I’d like to share the details of my current juice fast with you to show you what’s it’s like and what you need to remember to do in order to be successful in your juice fasting.

My last meal was a healthy dinner on Saturday, January 26th.

Day 1 - Sunday, Jan. 27 - 175 pounds. Drank juices & water. Morning & evening enemas.
Day 2 - Monday, Jan. 28 - 173 pounds. Drank juices & water, with morning & evening enemas.
Day 3 - Tues, Jan 29 - 170 pounds. Drank juices & water, with morning & evening enemas.
Day 4 - Wed, Jan 30 - 168 pounds. Drank juices & water. Morning & evening enemas.

Here are the things that I have been doing every day that you’ll want to do when you juice fast:

1. Drink only fresh homemade juices, water, homemade vegetable broth, and any combination of the live whole food based InstaFresh super juice powdered drink mixes by Uri such as The Feast, Beyond Berries, Barley Pure, Sweet Careet, etc.

I have actually been drinking a smoothie every morning made from the following ingredients: 2 scoops of The Feast & 1 scoop of Barley Pure by Uri, half a raw lemon, cayenne pepper, 2 teaspoons of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar, Himalayan salt water, 2 tablespoons freshly ground flaxseed, 1 scoop of Multi Clean Colon Support by Uri, 1 scoop of psyllium husk seeds, 1 tablespoon of raw honey. In the afternoon and in the evening, I’ve been drinking a serving of the live whole food based InstaFresh super juice powdered drink, the Feast, by Uri.

2. Add some kind of colon cleaning support to your drinks once a day. In my case, I used “Multi Clean Colon Support” by Uri International.

3. Do a morning and evening enema with lukewarm water. You can find directions on how to do this on my blog. This is a critical step to make sure you do because it helps to get the old feces and toxic material out of your colon while you’re on your fast. You’ll need a simple $15 enema kit to do this yourself.

4. Do a morning and evening dry brush massage. This is simply a rough brush that you brush all over your body to rub off dead skin and to help remove the toxins that are being expelled through your skin. A dry brush massage is quite an invigorating experience and very healthy for you.

5. Do some kind of moderate daily exercise such as walking for 30-60 minutes. I strongly encourage you to go for a long walk in the morning and again in the late afternoon or early evening.

6. Stay away from the kitchen unless you’re preparing your smoothie or juice or vegetable broth. You don’t want to hang around food or people eating food which may prove to be a temptation.

7. Get plenty of rest every night and try to go to bed early.

8. Keep doing your normal work routine, and you’ll be surprised that you’ll have a lot of energy as your fast progresses.

SO FAR…this has been a very easy fast for me to do. I haven’t had any problems so far. I’ve felt plenty of energy and take walks whenever I can. I have had good sleep as well. My body feels like it is getting thinner, healthier, and more energetic. I’m working full 8-10 hour days with no problems whatsoever. My thinking is clearer than ever, and my spirit is spiritually in tune with God and hearing His voice. I’m not sure how long I will continue this juice fast, but for now, I feel like I could go on indefinitely…

Caffeine: Why it helps during exercise

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

In endurance events, the first cause of fatigue is loss of muscle sugar, so athletes do whatever they can to preserve sugar levels. Caffeine causes the body to produce large amounts of adrenalin, which causes fat to be released from fat cells and float in the bloodstream. This extra fat is taken up by the muscles and used for energy, thus preserving the body’s limited stored supply of muscle sugar. When muscles run our of sugar, the athlete requires more oxygen to do the same job, slows down, fatigues earlier, and has difficulty maintaining his performance.

A questionnaire from competitors at the 2005 Ironman Triathlon World Championships showed that seventy-three percent of the athletes believe that caffeine improves performance and 84 percent believe it improves concentration. During competition, 65 percent used cola drinks and 24 percent used caffeinated gels. Although caffeine can increase risk for heat stroke and theoretically can cause irregular heartbeats, almost none of the athletes reported suffering any side effects from taking caffeine.

You Are What You Eat - Keys to Good Nutrition & Tips to Eating Healthy Feast Uri Yuri

Submitted by Keys to Good Nutrition and Tips to Eating Healthy Feast Uri Yuri

keys20.jpg “You are what you eat, drink, breathe, think, say, and do.” - Patricia Bragg
It IS possible to be healthy and to create a healthy lifestyle IF you truly want it bad enough. In the end, you, and you alone, determine your health - not your doctor, not your parents, not your spouse, not your genes, and not even God. In fact, God has put the responsibility for your health into your own hands, with the recommendation that you choose LIFE and not death. Every day of your life you will have to make decisions about what you will eat and drink, what you will say and do, and what you will think about. In each of these decisions, you will be choosing life or death, health or ill-health. It’s all up to you, and you cannot blame anyone else for your choices.

This blog focuses on good nutrition and eating healthy as the cornerstone to living a healthy lifestyle. There are other important keys to health: regular exercise and deep breathing, drinking plenty of natural spring water daily, giving your body the rest it needs to rejuvenate itself, detoxifying your body and its environment, giving and receiving love and being forgiving, accepting, and thankful; and developing your spiritual life through a friendship with God. I will touch on these important keys to health occasionally, but the main focus of this blog will be on eating right and giving your body the good nutrition it needs to function the way that God intended it to.

We need to be wise regarding what we put into our bodies. The expression, “You are what you eat,” is profoundly true and sobering. What we put into our bodies (food & drink) will determine what kind of life we will live. It’s a simple “cause-effect” relationship. The cause is what we eat and drink, and the effect is the health or ill-health of our bodies. There is a spiritual principle involved here that comes from the Bible that says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.”

Think for a minute how this applies to what people “sow” into their bodies every day. Whenever a person eats right and puts good nutrition into his body, he will reap health and life. On the other hand, when a person eats badly and puts refined, denatured, toxic, processed food into his body, he will reap malnutrition, ill-health, and premature death. Unfortunately, most people are deceived about this basic principle, and they continue to eat the wrong foods, all the while mystified about the various ailments they are continually suffering from. I am writing this blog to help people get free from this deception, and to guide them to living a healthy lifestyle through changing the way that they eat.

keys21.png Take a look at the photograph of the nursing baby. The mother is feeding (sowing into) her baby the best possible “food” from which her baby will reap health and life. Now imagine a mother feeding her baby man-made refined and processed “formula,” and imagine the malnutrition and ill-health that baby will experience as a result. God, or what some people like to call “mother nature,” knows what is best for our bodies, which is why we should all eat organic whole foods rather than all the processed junk they sell in the supermarkets.

VSL#3 DS probiotic gluten free but only available in powder by prescription yet effective in colitis and may be beneficial in Celiac disease

Submitted by The Food Doc Journal

fooddoc56.jpg fooddoc66.jpg In a previous report on the probiotic VSL#3, I stated that VSL#3 DS (double strength) came in a capsule form that is gluten free. VSL#3 DS does not come in capsules. However, it does appear to be gluten free. VSL#3 DS is only available in sachets of powder. VSL#3 DS requires a prescription but the other forms of VSL#3 are available over the counter (OTC) without the need of a doctor’s prescription.

As far as I can determine, the prescription strength form of VSL#3, VSL#3 DS, is gluten free since it is unflavored. The flavored form of VSL#3 powder contains maltose that according to the manufacturer, is derived from barley. Though they report the maltose is highly processed to the point they believe no gluten residues remain they cannot insure it is gluten-free.

To take VSL#3 DS and VSL#3 OTC powder, you simply dissolve one or more packets in water or another liquid and drink it. The OTC VSL#3 capsules can be taken orally and do not contain maltose so should be free of gluten like the unflavored OTC powder and the prescription form of the powder. The dosing of VSL#3 recommended varies according the the strength, form and indication.

fooddoc11.jpg Each sachet of VSL#3 DS powder contains 900 billion bacteria. The OTC form of VSL#3 powder contains 450 billion live bacteria. Eight different species including four stains of lactobacilli, three strains of bifidobacter and Streptococcus salivarius, subspecies thermophilus are present in highly concentrated live freeze dried preparation. The estimate of total bacteria in the digestive tract is 100 trillion.

The base dose of VSL#3 DS is ½ to 1 packet orally daily but doses as high as 2-4 packets orally daily are recommended to treat active ulcerative colitis. The over the counter forms contain lower numbers of active probiotic bacteria.

fooddoc12.jpg Since the over the counter flavored sachet packets of VSL#3 contain maltose derived from barley as a sweetener they can be assumed gluten-free. A representative from the medical affairs division of the manufacturer, Sigma Tau Pharmaceuticals, confirmed this with me by phone recently. She did say the company was seeking to have the preparations certified as gluten free. However, it is important to remember that the FDA has not yet decided on a gluten-free standard. There is a concern that up to 20 parts per million will be accepted as “gluten-free”. It is not yet known if Sigma Tau Pharmaceuticals will be able to guarantee any of the preparations are completely free of gluten.

The unflavored packets and capsules are free of the sweetener maltose, as is the DS powder but all of the preparations may contain traces of dairy. There is extensive scientific data on VSL#3 in the literature. Based on some of that data, I am prescribing VSL#3 DS powder and recommending over the counter VSL#3 capsules and unflavored powder to my patients regularly. I am advising my patients to avoid the flavored form of VSL#3. Some of my patients report nausea with VSL#3, especially the double strength powder. Reducing the dose often helps prevent this side effect. I also caution those who are dairy allergic or sensitive to avoid VSL#3.

Since VSL#3 DS is only available by prescription and it is approved for the treatment of colitis, many insurance companies will cover it. Some also cover the over the counter preparations when prescribed in writing by a physician. The over the counter forms that do not require a prescription. VSL#3 can be difficult to find. In our area more pharmacies are carrying it but typically you have to ask the pharmacy staff for it. Since it is recommended that the preparations be refrigerated many pharmacies keep VSL#3 in with other prescription medications in a refrigerator behind the counter. Over the counter forms of VSL#3 can also be purchased on-line directly from Sigma Tau Pharmaceuticals at www.VSL3.com.

fooddoc13.jpg Other probiotic preparations that I understand are gluten free are Flora Q and Ultimate Flora. Both are also reportedly dairy-free. Like VSL#3 they contain multiple strains of live active probiotic bacteria and are available over the counter
fooddoc14.jpg The brand of probiotic yeast I recommend is Florastor. It contains Saccharomyces boulardii lyo, an active form of the yeast naturally present in the fruit mangosteen. It has been reported to improve leaky gut, treat and prevent relapses of Crohn’s disease and treat antibiotic associated diarrhea due to Clostridium difficile infection. However, it should be used with caution under a doctor’s supervision if you are immune suppressed. I avoid recommending it for my patients who are taking immune suppressing medications. There are rare reports of blood stream infection in immune suppressed individuals otherwise it appears to be very safe. The most common brand of Saccharomyces boulardii, Florastor, does contain lactose. Other forms of this probiotic yeast are available but should be checked for gluten.

VSL#3 does not yet have an approved indication for Celiac disease like it does for ulcerative colitis or pouchitis. Scientific data continues to accumulate supporting its use for the treatment and prevention of relapse in Crohn’s disease, treatment of antibiotic associated diarrhea and Clostridium difficile infection, and treatment of traveler’s diarrhea. There are published reports that VSL#3 bacteria are capable of breaking down toxic gliadin.

There are several scientific studies indicating that altered gut bacteria play an important role in the development of Celiac disease and failure to respond to a gluten free diet. Probiotic bacteria in sourdough bread has also shown promise in reducing the toxicity of gluten. Therefore, probiotic bacteria may be protective in Celiac disease. It has been shown that probiotic bacteria increase tight junctions or reduce leaky gut, suppress bad bacteria, compete with bad bacteria for nutrients and binding sites of the intestinal wall of the gut, reduce secretions and inflammatory reaction from infection, and have the ability to enhance the body’s production of defensive proteins and intestinal digestive enzymes.

On the basis of the known and theoretical advantages of probiotics I recommend probiotics to all my patients, especially those with Celiac disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease or IBS. One my suggestions includes taking a probiotic before meals eaten out in restaurants is based on the theory that probiotic bacteria have the ability break down gluten into a non-toxic form as well as the known protective effects of probiotics described above. If you inadvertently ingest gluten due to cross contamination you may, at least theoretically, be somewhat protected.

Until medications such as combined enzyme therapy that breaks down gluten into a non-toxic form or a tight junction promoter such as AT 1001 are available there is nothing to offer the patient with Celiac disease except the admonition to be careful and follow a strict gluten-free diet. Those of us following such a diet and living in the “real world” know this is much easier than said. At least we know that probiotic bacteria may help promote tighter junctions in the gut reducing risk of gluten or gliadin that is eaten by accident from getting through to initiate an immune response. Again, this is speculative on my part but overall I believe the potential benefit probably outweighs the risk. However, I do recommend avoiding the flavored form of VSL#3 do to the possibility the maltose may contain gluten protein particles.

In the past I have told patients that taking probiotic bacteria while taking an antibiotic didn’t make sense since the bacteria would be killed by the antibiotic. Instead, I recommended that they start after they completed their antibiotic. However, a recent study indicates that taking a probiotic while on antibiotics may decrease the risk of antibiotic associated diarrhea and C. difficile infection. C. difficile infection is an increasingly serious problem in people treated with antibiotics, especially in hospitalized patients receiving very powerful or broad-spectrum antibiotics. It can be severe and life threatening, especially for elderly patients.

In future posts I will review the benefits of probiotic bacteria and yeast. I am also working on an e-book that comprehensively reviews probiotics. These supplements may critical in the prevention and treatment of leaky gut. Increased gut permeability or leaky gut is increasingly being recognized as the critical predisposing factor to the development of Celiac disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease and several non-digestive autoimmune disorders.

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Heart Attacks

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

More than 75 years ago, we learned that lack of vitamin D causes rickets, bone deformities and failure to grow in children. Twenty years ago, reports started to appear showing that lack of vitamin D also impairs your immunity to limit your ability to kill germs. This was followed by studies showing that it also increase risk for certain cancers. Now the Framingham Offspring Study from Harvard tells us that low blood levels of vitamin D increase risk for heart attacks (Circulation, January 2008).

The authors followed 1700 participants (mean age 59) without prior cardiovascular disease for five years. Those with low blood levels of active vitamin D at the onset had one and a half times the chances of suffering a heart attack. Those with low vitamin D and high blood pressure had twice the risk. At this time, nobody knows why lack of vitamin D increases heart attack risk.

Dietary sources of vitamin D include deep-water fish and fortified cereals, but most North Americans meet their needs for vitamin D from sunlight and not from their diets. If you do not get out in the sun at least a few times a week, ask your doctor to check your blood levels of vitamin D. People with dark skin and those who are overweight are most likely to be deficient. Free newsletter

Plant Omega-3’s Better than Fish Oils

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

Omega-3 fatty acids protect against heart attacks, inflammatory diseases such as rheumatiod arthritis, depression, and attention deficit disorder. You probably know that you can get omega-3s in seafood or fish oils. However, the omega-3 fatty acids in seeds such as whole grains may be even more important in maintaining your health than the omega-3s from fish.

Omega-3 fatty acids are the least stable fats in our diet. Whole grains contain vitamin E to keep the omega-3s fresh and prevent them from turning rancid, but omega-3 fatty acids in fish are not protected by vitamin E and therefore turn rancid much more quickly than the omega-3 fatty acids in seeds.

Three large studies, The Lyon Heart Study, the GISSI Prevenzione Trial, and in The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Study have established that omega-3 fish oils help to prevent heart attacks and reduce pain and swelling in diseases such as arthritis, psoriasis, and possibly even asthma. Other research shows that the omega-3 alpha linoleic acids in seeds, nuts, beans and whole grain may be as necessary as the omega-3s in fish oils to prevent heart attacks. Journal references

Omega-3s found in fish oils are mostly long chain fatty acids. Omega-3s in plants, particularly seeds, contain much shorter chains and are weaker than the omega-3s found in fish. However, the shorter chain omega-3s, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), found in leafy greens and seeds are converted to the long chain fatty acids in the human body. Long- chain fish omega-3s enter blood and cells more rapidly and produce more rapid effects than short chain plant omega-3s.

Over the long haul, humans must get omega-3s from plants, as well as fish, because all omega-3s break down very quickly when exposed to oxygen in your body, and you need large amounts of vitamin E to prevent omega-3s from turning rancid. Fish oils are extremely low in vitamin E, while virtually every seed or plant source of omega-3s is loaded also with vitamin E. So your body stores far more short chain omega-3s from plants in your body fat.

Dietary fats are classified by their chemical structure into saturated, polyunsaturated and mono unsaturated. The polyunsaturated fats are further sub-classified into omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. Omega-6 polyunsaturated fats form prostaglandins that cause clotting, a thickening of the blood and constriction of arteries that cause heart attacks.

On the other hand, omega-3 polyunsaturated fats prevent heart attacks and high blood pressure by helping thin blood, relax arteries and prevent clotting. Over millions of years, humans have consumed a diet that contained approximately equal amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids, but over the past 150 years, humans have increased their consumption of omega-6s by taking in vegetable oils from the seeds of corn, sunflower, safflower, cotton and soybeans.

These oils are used in most prepared foods, frozen foods, margarines, French fries, potato chips, and bakery products. North Americans eat a diet with a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids that is almost 20 times higher in omega-6s than omega-3s, instead of the earlier ratio of about 2:1. This abnormally high intake of omega-6s blocks arteries and causes swelling throughout the body. To meet your needs for short chain omega-3 fatty acids found in plants, eat plenty of green leafy vegetables, and seeds such as flaxseed, whole grains, beans and nuts. More on omega-3 fatty acids

Colon Cleansing & Health - Keys to Good Nutrition & to Eating Healthy Uri Feast Yuri

Submitted by Keys to Good Nutrition and Tips to Eating Healthy Feast Uri Yuri

keys16.gif “We are one of the sickest nations in the world. Despite all the vast sums of money that are spent on health care each year, we are still one of the sickest countries in the world. In 1900 we were the healthiest country of all the nations. We were in first place. At last count in 1998 we had dropped down to the 79th healthiest country. The main reason for this tremendous decline in the country’s health is because of two main factors: number one the increased use of junk food and sugar, and number two, the increased number of clogged constipated colons. These two factors alone have destroyed the health of this once great nation. The quality of food and the health of the colon can either make or break a country. In our case it has just about broken it.” - Dr. Irons

I recently received an email from Dr. Ted Broer that I would like to share parts of with you. It is all focused on the colon and its relationship to health. Here are personally selected portions of an interview between Dr. Broer’s “Healthview” and Dr. V.E. Irons.

HEALTHVIEW: Mr. Irons, we have talked with you at length before on the colon and its relation to ill health. Is a toxic colon really as big a factor in premature aging as you say it is?

IRONS: Absolutely. As far as I am concerned, a diseased, toxic colon is one of the greatest causes of premature aging that ever existed. Old age begins right in the colon. The more diseased and toxic a person’s colon is, the more quickly he will age. A toxic colon can rob a person of his youth, deplete his energy supply, and advance him rapidly on the road to old age. In my opinion, there is only one MAIN disease in this country, and that is a toxic colon. It is directly responsible for more health problems than any other single cause. What makes me so upset today is that most people never even consider the colon as the source of their health problems. Whether a person has a cold, a headache, a fever, or whether he is suffering from a serious health problem such as arthritis, diabetes or even cancer-it just doesn’t matter-THE COLON IS NEVER CONSIDERED, it is never mentioned, IT IS AS IF THE COLON DIDN’T EVEN EXIST! Yet, ironically, there is not one health condition in the world that is not adversely affected by a toxic colon. Every single health problem that ever existed, can either directly or indirectly be caused by a diseased and toxic colon.
About the only place you see a normal healthy colon today is in an anatomy book.

HEALTHVIEW: How many people would you say have an unhealthy colon?
IRONS: Virtually everyone! Just a few years ago the U.S. Public Health Service said that 90% of the people had a clogged colon. I would disagree with that statement. I feel that 99% of the people have a clogged colon. Almost everyone today has a clogged, constipated colon. Most people’s colons, instead of being fast moving sewer systems, have become stagnant cesspools. You can have two or three movements a day, and still have a terribly clogged colon.

DR. IRONS: FOUR SYMPTOMS OF OLD AGE THAT ARE CAUSED BY A TOXIC COLON

Exhaustion: Fatigue and exhaustion are the main symptoms of a toxic colon. Toxins from the colon will travel to the energy glands of the body (the thyroid and the adrenal glands) and slow them down immensely. As soon as this happens, you will gradually start to lose the pep and vitality you had in your youth. The sooner you clean out your colon, the sooner you will regain your youthful energy.

Facial Wrinkles: Facial lines and wrinkles start right in the colon. Toxins from the colon will age the tissues of the skin and cause it to sag and wrinkle. The best way to keep your skin smooth and wrinkle-free is to start cleaning out your colon.

Poor Sex Life: A toxic colon is one of the greatest causes of a poor sex life. How could anyone fully enjoy sex when he has up to fifteen years of encrusted fecal matter and mucus in his colon? HE CAN’T-and HE DOESN’T. I have gotten so many letters from people who regained the sexual potency of their youth after they went on my colon cleansing program. One woman wrote to me and told me that her husband wasn’t going to divorce her now because their sex life had improved so much. Cleaning out her colon saved her marriage. It happens all the time. So if you want to remain sexually potent for your entire life, start cleaning your colon today. And if I can at my age, I know you can at your age, go get with it!

Infertility: One couple I know was not able to have a child in their fourteen years of married life. After both the husband and wife cleaned out their colons (it took them about a year), they were then able to give birth to their first child. They eventually had a second child. I was able to father a son at the age of 81 and the main reason I could do so was because my colon was clean.

A CLEAN COLON RESULTS IN:
1. Tremendous energy 2. Smooth, wrinkle free skin,
3. Great, energetic sex 4. Fertility into your eighties

IRONS: Most people are aging because they are walking cesspools. They are literally rotting and decaying from the inside out.

HEALTHVIEW: How exactly does a diseased colon cause premature aging?
IRONS: It’s the poisons. That’s what the problem is. Poisons from a toxic colon will travel to every part of the body such as the heart, the brain, the kidneys, and the liver and age these organs prematurely. There is no part of a person’s body which cannot be affected by a toxic colon. The poisons from a backed up colon will eventually seep into every single cell in the body and cause grave health problems. What would happen if you didn’t empty your kitchen garbage can for months and you kept on throwing more and more food on top of it? Wouldn’t your entire house start smelling like a garbage dump? Well, the same thing happens with a constipated, clogged up colon. The stench and fumes will permeate the entire body-including your skin, your teeth, your eyes, and even your nerves. NO PART OF YOUR BODY IS IMMUNE FROM THE POISONS OF A TOXIC COLON. It is the toxic filth in our systems, which kills us. That is why people age so rapidly today-their own internal filth is killing them. Most people are aging because they are walking cesspools. They are actually rotting and decaying from the inside out.

HEALTHVIEW: Does the medical profession acknowledge that a toxic colon can cause any health problems?
IRONS: I doubt it. The medical profession knows very little about the colon. Most of them are ignorant on the subject-totally ignorant. In my opinion, most medical doctors should have their licenses taken away until they start to treat the real cause of people’s problems-a diseased colon. Most of the drugs, medicines, and operations given today have never made any person’s colon one bit healthier. If anything, they have only made the situation hundreds of times worse.

HEALTHVIEW: What exactly do you recommend that people do to clean out the colon?
IRONS: I have a simple two-step program. The first part is to take my intestinal cleaner twice a day. The second part is to use my colema board to do-it-yourself home colonics. If your readers follow this simple two-part program, they will be able to clean a good part of the stagnant filth out of their colons in just 4-6 weeks. After that, they will feel at least a hundred times better than they feel right now. And best of all, they will begin to enjoy the energy they had ten to fifteen years ago or more. The intestinal cleaner helps to loosen the hardened, impacted fecal matter and mucus.

HEALTHVIEW: Do you have any last words of encouraging advice for our readers on staying young and healthy and avoiding future diseases?
IRONS: Yes, I do. Remember, as I said before, old age and disease starts right in the colon. If your readers want to have the health and energy of a youth again, they can easily do so by cleaning out their colons-and keeping them clean. If you are in old age, you can now regain the health and energy of a middle-aged person. If you are middle-aged, you can now regain the health and energy of a person in his twenties. And if you are in your twenties, you can now regain the health and energy you once had in your teens. The secret to a healthy life is a healthy colon. I am 87 years old now, and as a result of keeping my colon clean, I have more energy and pep than most people who are only fifty. I am up at 7:00 am every day and I put in a full day’s work—seven days a week. I hope all of your readers are able to live to be at least as old as I am now—and hopefully a lot longer than that.

How to live a long healthy life - By V.E. Irons
1. Don’t eat refined sugar or sweets - Refined sugar is one of the greatest “life shorteners” there is. This means don’t eat any sweets, pastries, donuts, ice cream, or soda pop.
2. Don’t eat Junk Food - My simple rule is this: the less junk food you eat, the longer you will live. It is the best advice I can give you to avoid old age.
3. Vegetable Salad-Try to eat a large vegetable salad once a day. It’s great to keep your colon clean.
4. Meat and Milk-Try not to eat meat and milk products during the same meal. These foods digest better when they are eaten alone.
5. Fresh Fruit-Try to eat at least two pieces of fresh fruit every day.
6. Water-Drink your fluids at least half an hour before your meals or at least three hours after your meals. Try to drink at least a quart of good water every day. This will help to keep your colon clean.
7. Raw Foods-Eat as much raw food as you can. The more cooked foods you eat, the quicker you will age.

Eight Glasses of Water a Day: No Health Benefit

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

Eight glasses of water a day will just give you a lot of extra trips to the bathroom. Drinking extra water does not “flush out toxins” or offer any other useful function.

Why do so many people believe this rule? The number originally came from the National Academy of Sciences of the United States Food and Nutrition Board, which publishes recommended daily allowances of nutrients. The 1945 edition of the Food and Nutrition Board said “A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 liters (about 8 cups) daily in most instances.” This amount is based on the calculation of one milliliter of water for each calorie of food. HOWEVER, the Board also noted that most of the water you need is in the food you eat.

All foods contain water. Even the driest nut or seed has a lot of water in it. Furthermore, when food is digested, it is converted to energy, carbon dioxide and WATER. Most people can get the fluid the body needs from food, and they only need to drink enough water to prevent constipation.

Researchers have showed that plain water is not needed as long as enough fluid is obtained from other drinks and food. Twenty-seven healthy men consumed one of two diets for three-day periods and were studied in a lab setting. The first diet included plain water while the second omitted it, relying on only foods and beverages other than water for fluid. None of the nine measures of hydration were affected. Journal reference

A reasonable amount for a healthy human is one cup of water or any other fluid with each meal. If you have a problem with constipation you may not be drinking enough water, but if you are not constipated, you are getting plenty. You’ll also want to replace fluids whenever you sweat a lot, particularly when you exercise or in hot weather. Drink water whenever you feel thirsty, but there’s no health benefit from forcing yourself to drink eight glasses of water a day.

Fewer Hard Workouts May Make You a Better Athlete

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

How much time should you spend working at your maximum level in your sport, compared to miles or days spent going at a relaxed pace? Researchers at the University of Madrid in Spain divided competitive distance runners into two groups. One group did frequent intense workouts and fewer slow recovery miles, while the second group did fewer intense workouts and more slow miles. At the end of five months, the runners who did fewer intense workouts and more recovery miles improved far more than those who ran fewer miles and spent a lot of their time trying to run very fast. Journal reference

All competitive athletes from marathon runners to weight lifters know that they must exercise intensely to compete successfully in sports. However, every time you exercise intensely, your muscles are damaged and you feel sore on the next day. If you try to exercise intensely when your muscles are sore, you are liable to injure yourself, break down, or become chronically fatigued with muscles hurting all the time. So athletes train by taking a hard workout that makes their muscles sore, and going easy for as many days as it takes for the soreness to go away. This study shows the importance of allowing adequate recovery time between intense workouts. Recovery workouts make your muscles more fibrous so they can take more abuse when you exercise on your hard days. Principles of training

Why I’m A Uri Distributor - Keys to Good Nutrition & Eating Healthy Uri Feast Yuri

Submitted by Keys to Good Nutrition and Tips to Eating Healthy Feast Uri Yuri

keys15.jpg WHY I JOINED URI INTERNATIONAL AS A DISTRIBUTOR of the FEAST

There were many compelling reasons for me to join Uri International as a distributor.

The first and most important reason was the incredibly healthy product, the Feast, by Uri International.

My first exposure to Uri was when a friend of mine, Brett Rademacher, gave me some samples of the Feast to try. I took them home and read the ingredients list before trying them. I’ve always had a great interest in health and nutrition and have studied it for many years.

When I read the ingredients list, I was shocked by what I read. The ingredients included all live whole food based natural ingredients including 30 antioxidant-rich fruits and berries, 30 powerful greens and vegetables, 11 nutrient dense seeds, nuts, and sprouts, 83+ active enzymes and fulvic minerals, and 22 strains of resilient living probiotics! I was sold on the product before I ever tried it - just by reading the incredibly healthy live whole food ingredients on the label.

In addition, I realized that the Feast didn’t have any isolated, synthetic, or inorganic vitamins or minerals, which I didn’t want in my nutritional supplement. It was non-pasteurized and preservative free, which was also very important to me. I discovered that the fresh live whole foods were dried to a powder form in less than 30 seconds and dried at temperatures under 100 degrees F, which meant that none of the nutritional value of the food was lost in the drying process.

I also realized that the Feast had more variety, quality, and quantity than any other concentrated whole food supplement that I had ever seen or existed in the market. In addition, I discovered that the Feast had a very high ORAC Value (antioxidant value) of 1,990 per scoop.

THEN I tasted the Feast, mixing it in some cold water, and found that it tasted delicious! I was afraid that it would taste awful like so many other green drinks, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. It actually tasted great. I realized later that it was all the fruits and berries in the Feast that made it tastes so delicious.

In conclusion, once I had read the ingredients list on the Feast sample packet, I mixed it up and drank it and found it quite delicious. At that point I was convinced that this was an incredibly healthy and nutritious product that I would take every day, whether or not I ever became a distributor, and that I could truly believe in and easily share with others. I also realized that there was no other product in the marketplace that could compare with Uri’s Feast.

There were other reasons that led to my becoming a distributor of the Feast and other Uri International (Yuri) products, but the most important reason was the product itself. To me, a product must be able to stand on its own two feet and speak for itself. It must be able to stand up to the competition and prove itself to be far superior in quantity, variety, and quality of ingredients.

In addition, it must be priced fairly in the retail market to similar products in the functional foods or functional beverage category. One trip to a local health food store showed me that the price range for this kind of product ranged from about $38 on the low end to around $60 on the high end. Uri’s flagship product, the Feast, was priced at $43.95 for a one month supply. To me, this seemed like a very reasonable price as compared to other similar products. As many of you know, nutritional network marketing companies are notorious for charging very high retail prices for their products. This inflated pricing eventually causes many people to stop ordering their products or never even try them because they know they are so over priced. This is NOT the case with the Uri products. I have found them to be very fairly priced for average people to be able to afford them.

Cold Toes Can Mean Diabetes

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

Painfully cold toes can ruin outdoor sports on cold days. We solve the problem with adhesive toe-warmer packets on our socks. However, if your toes feel cold even when it is not cold outside, or if you have loss of feeling or tingling as well, you need a complete work-up for causes of nerve damage. Numb, cold or tingling feet can be one of the first symptoms of diabetes.

Nerves can be damaged by something pinching or stretching them, such as excessive pressure from moving a limb repeatedly (as in carpal tunnel syndrome in your hand), scar tissue, or a disc problem in your back. Nerves can also be damaged by diabetes; lack of a vitamin (such as B12 in pernicious anemia); infections such as Lyme disease, shingles and herpes; poisonings by substances such as mercury or lead, or by diseases such as multiple sclerosis. You should never ignore a neuropathy because many causes are controllable before you suffer permanent damage to your nerves. Check with your doctor to find the cause of any neuropathy.

Stevia Sweetener - Keys to Good Nutrition & to Eating Healthy with Uri Feast Yuri

keys13.jpg Enjoy STEVIA
the World’s Healthiest Natural Sweetener

in the Feast by Uri (Yuri) International

Stevia drops (2 drops = 1 tsp sugar) from a South African plant, helps regulate blood sugar and lowers blood pressure, but it doesn’t affect normal blood pressure.

Calorie-free Stevia is suitable for diabetics, safe for children, and doesn’t cause cavities.

Stevia helps mental alertness, combats fatigue, and improves digestion.

Here’s a great article that I found at http://www.stevia.com/

“Stevia - A Better Alternative to Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners,” by Lisa Jobs.

keys14.jpg The Feast, by Uri International (Yuri), is sweetened by fruits and berries, but it also has a little bit of Stevia in it. I encourage you to try the Feast and see for yourself how good it tastes! And remember to reject every product that has artificial sweeteners in it such as NutraSweet, Aspartame, Splenda, saccharin, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, white sugar, sucralose, Sweet-N-Low, Equal, etc. All of these artificial sweeteners are destructive to your health no matter what the advertising says or the FDA. Avoid them at all costs. The healthiest natural sweeteners are unheated unprocessed honey, stevia, and organic agave nectar.

How to Lower Your Chances of Dying Early

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

Researchers at National Cancer Institute in Bethesda showed that engaging in physical activity for at least three hours per week appears to decrease chances of dying early by more than 25 percent.

The investigators evaluated the exercise habits of 252,925 adults aged 50 to 71 years who were enrolled in the National Institutes of Health–American Association of Retired Persons (NIH-AARP) Diet and Health Study. 7900 deaths occurred during 1,265,347 person-years of follow-up. Those with the relatively modest exercise program of 30 minutes on most days of the week, or vigorous exercise of at least 20 minutes three times per week, were 27 percent less likely to die during the followup period. The authors state that: “Our findings suggest that engaging in any physical activity by those who are currently sedentary represents an important opportunity to decrease the risk of mortality.” Journal reference

Another study from India showed that former athletes who continue to exercise all their lives are far less likely to suffer heart attacks than former athletes who do not continue to exercise. Compared to sedentary former athletes, active older athletes weigh less, have less body fat, lower total cholesterol, bad LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and ratio of total cholesterol to good HDL cholesterol than sedentary older athletes, all signs of decreased risk for heart attacks. Surprisingly, sedentary older athletes have higher cholesterol and triglyceride levels than sedentary older non-athletes. It takes a lot of muscle to be a good athlete. Insulin, insulin-like growth factors and growth hormones give people large muscles and bones to make them stronger. However, these same hormones also cause the body to store fat. So former athletes who stop exercising are more likely to be fat and have higher cholesterols because of these same hormones.

The message is: start exercising, and once you start, keep it up for the rest of your (long) life.

A FEW MORE FAMOUS QUOTES
ON JUICE FASTING

I’d like to share with you a few more quotes on fasting that will inspire and motivate you to get started with the joy of juice fasting.

These quotes were gleaned from a great website that I would also like to recommend you visit.

http://www.fasting.com/

“Every patient carries her or his own doctor inside.”–Albert Schweitzer, M.D., 1875-1965, Alsatian medical missionary, theologian and musician

“Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick, is to feed your sickness.”–Hippocrates, M.D., 460-377 B.C., Father of Western Medicine

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest her or his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”–Thomas Edison, 1847-1931, America’s greatest inventive mind (patented 1093: light bulb, phonograph, microphone, carbon telephone transmitter, motion-picture camera, et. al.)

“Fasting and natural diet, though essentially unknown [in today’s U.S.] as a therapy, should be the first treatment when someone discovers that she or he has a medical problem. It should not be applied only to the most advanced cases, as is present practice. Whether the patient has a cardiac condition, hypertension, autoimmune disease, fibroids, or asthma, he or she must be informed that fasting and natural, plant-based diets are a viable alternative to conventional therapy, and an effective one. The time may come when not offering this substantially more effective nutritional approach will be considered malpractice.”–Joel Fuhrman, M.D., from his book, Fasting And Eating For Health: A Medical Doctor’s Program for Conquering Disease

“A wise person should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings.” –Hippocrates, 400 years before Christ; famed Greek physician and Father of Western Medicine

“Fasting is the greatest remedy–the physician within!”–Philippus Paracelsus, nearly 500 years ago; famed Swiss physician, considered one of three fathers of Western Medicine, along with Greece’s Hippocrates and Galen

Cofactors May Explain Why Some Get Colon Cancer, Others Don’t

Submitted by Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin

Although scientists are not sure what causes colon or rectal cancers, they know that they are associated with lack of exercise, eating too much meat, and the human wart virus (HPV). A study from Sendai, Japan shows that men who spend a lot of time walking are at reduced susceptibility to developing colon cancer.

An extensive review of the world’s literature shows that colorectal cancer occurs far more frequently in prosperous industrialized countries, and that dietary factors may cause up to 75 percent of these cancers. You are increased risk for colon cancer if you are overweight, and exercise reduces your risk. Rectal cancer is not affected by obesity or exercise, and may be associated more with infection, such as with the HPV virus that causes genital warts. Since the vast majority of people who are infected with HPV do not get cancer, we have to explain why some do. The leading theory is that of cofactors: some combination of infectious agents, genetic susceptibility or lifestyle factors. I think that rectal cancer requires some kind of infection, but you do not develop the cancer unless you also smoke, lack vitamin D, eat a lot of meat, or some other combination of factors. Colon cancer appears to require some combination of factors such as lack of vitamin D, eating meat, not exercising or not eating enough foods from plants. Journal references; more on colon cancer

- Quotation by Allan Cott, M.D.

Don’t be a Slave to Foods

“Most humans are slaves to foods; they must have breakfast, lunch and dinner at regular meal hours every day, year in and year out. They eat whether they are hungry or not, and their poor bodies are burdened by overeating . . . and usually poor nutrition as well! No wonder we have so many physical wrecks! One of the greatest nutritional teachers in the world, Professor Arnold Ehret, said, ‘Life is a tragedy of nutrition.’ How true is the old trite saying, ‘Man digs his grave with his knife and fork!’ Many people never give their stomachs a rest. They continually stuff and work the digestive and eliminative functions with an overabundance of food. This excessive burden means that the functions of digestion and elimination become so overworked and so exhausted that they simply collapse. The entire body then becomes enervated! Millions suffer from fatigue. Old age is not a time of life. It is a condition of the body. It is not time that ages the body, it is abuse that does.” – Herbert Shelton
